Holy Fuck!

Ok, so it was a week ago already, but I went to see Holy Fuck play at Heaven last week, a bit late on the post I know! I really do believe they are one of the most exciting bands out there at the mo, especially live.

After seeing them a few years ago and thinking back then they were pretty awesome, I jumped at the chance to see them perform their new album, Latin Music. I’d say they’ve become a bit more experimental and perhaps even more psychedelic too (think Ozric Tentacles). There were some intriguing instrumental methods being played out on stage, one of which required rolls of camera film to be fed through some sort of device – I couldn’t quite make out what it was unfortunately! To give you a glimpse of what they’re like live, check out this video. Amazing!

Random fact of the day

So, I never knew that the Chupa Chups logo was designed by Salvidor Dali. Fascinating stuff!

A tailored feast

A friend of mine recently introduced me to his girlfriends’ collection of rather lovely tailored (and homegrown) attire. ‘S.E.H Kelly makes clothes with mills and factories in England. Spun, stitched, cut, sewn, and finished — from fabrics to components and through every stage of manufacturing, each garment is a product of the clothing and textile industry in England.’

There is a limited selection of garments that have been produced for her spring/summer collection so go have a gander before it’s all snapped up!

It’s monday

Time for a Hanks/Ackroyd rap to stir up the soul.

Sci-fi madness

And so it was that I attended a sci-fi fancy dress party on the weekend. Inspired by the aliens from Monty Python’s ‘The Life of Brian’. Constructing this outfit turned out to be an all day affair but much fun was indeed had in the process!

So how was it done?

I stuffed a rubber glove with cotton wool and inserted pipe cleaners into the fingers to make them bend, then mounted it onto a bowler hat (alas! not a fancy one, but purchased from Party Party in Dalston, probably the best fancy dress shop like ever!) then secured it with a makeshift splint so it would stand up right. The eye is just a ball spray painted white and upon it I painted an iris and pupil. The eye was then secured with a bit of wire which I inserted through the glove. I created the mouth from a bit of red felt which was sewed onto the material. Finally, the fabric was draped over the whole lot (having cut a whole in the top beforehand so it would fit over the eye/glove) and hey presto! A fully functioning alien costume (which I managed to keep on most of the night!).

A kinky shop in Southend…

Ladies & Gentlemen

On the assumption that this event has been blogged about to the highest of heavens, I shan’t go into too much detail. But one piece of work that stuck out for me at the Pick me Up graphic art fair at Somerset House last weekend were these fascinating figures, by Chrisse Macdonald of Peepshow. ‘Ladies & Gentlemen’ is a collection formed from random bits of wood such as bannister knobs and door handles that have been cleverly crafted to make up a very original collection indeed. I can only predict that they will be very much sought after!
