Barry Mcgee

Barry Mcgee 'Untitled'

As part of the current anniversary show at SFMOMA I was particularly drawn to this artist, Barry Mcgee – a San Fran local and street artist who also goes by the pseudonym of Ray Fong, Twist, Twisto etc. Here he uses an unorthodox method of displaying his paintings/drawings/photographs inside a collection of mismatched frames that bulge out from the wall. Not only do I like his style – his use of typography, found ephemera, patterns, textures and drawing technique but his approach to presenting this collection is witty and refreshing.

Holiday blues

Hipstamatic San Fran and Vancouver

Good lord! It has been an age since I’ve posted. Sorry (again!) about the lack of activity folks. Life has been muchos busy and I’ve just returned from a west coast trip to Vancouver and San Francisco. Post holiday blues are well and truly setting in and I’m already wishing I was back in North America. From the fantastical mountain top views of Whistler to bike rides across the legendary Golden Gate Bridge, rowing a viking ship in English Bay to exploring the infamous rock, Alcatraz, these are two very different cities that offer a diverse amount of culture and history.

Barcelona

Lobster

So it wasn’t just all about Sonar. A few days either side of the festival were spent roaming around the various sites and sounds of Catalonia. More of a culinary experience than anything else, what with the omnipresent tapas and abundant food markets. La Boqueria is a shining example of the gastro heaven that is Barcelona. Also Europe’s largest food market apparently. Anyway, it’s a photographers playpen what with all the colours, array of fish and meats. A visual feast for the eyes indeed!

Postcard galore

I recently found an absolute gem of a site when I was looking for an image to represent my post on Detroit. This one has a plethora of amazing old postcards. I can see myself spending hours trawling through this treasure trove.  (more…)

Do not disturb

Allow me to introduce this fantastic collection of ‘Do Not Disturb’ signs, that have been accumulated from all over the world. Edoardo Flores – a retired civil servant from Italy has over 6000 in his collection from hotels he’s stayed at over the years. That’s a hell of alot of travelling!
